As a competence center of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), the Federal Gigabit Bureau (formerly the Federal Broadband Bureau) provides new impetus for the expansion of digital infrastructure in Germany. Our goal is to actively promote and accelerate the nationwide expansion of broadband. To this end, we maintain contact with the responsible authorities of the federal states, draw up guidelines on current topics and organize and support dialog events, workshops and seminars.
The expansion of gigabit networks requires a joint commitment from public sector and industry. The Federal Government’s Gigabit Bureau fulfills a wide range of tasks in this context. As the national BCO, it bundles organizational and technical solutions of the companies and combines them with local, regional and national framework conditions. With a competent team and comprehensive contacts to all relevant actors, the Federal Government’s Gigabit Bureau can identify targeted solutions and communicate between all parties involved.
What does the Federal Gigabit Bureau do?
The central task of the Federal Gigabit Bureau is to actively support the nationwide expansion of digital infrastructures. The Federal Gigabit Bureau provides information on current developments (e.g. in the areas of 5G, mobile telephony, in-house cabling, digital applications), offers comprehensive information and training services. As the federal competence center it is the central contact point for questions concerning the expansion of digital infrastructure for citizens, companies and public administrations. The Federal Government’s Gigabit Bureau also supports the federal states and local authorities in their initiatives and expansion plans in the usual manner and connects the players from politics, business and society. The aim is to promote the nationwide expansion of gigabit infrastructure in Germany.
The challenges, that emerge in connection with the broadband roll-out are as multi-facetted as the cities and regions in which the deployment is to be pushed. Including the establishment of technological concepts and strategies, questions on financing and co-funding through national and EU-programs, mobilizing synergetic approaches with other infrastructures and their suppliers as well as assistance to help exchanging experience and best practice examples. Furthermore, judicial framework and procedural requirements need to be followed during the broadband roll-out.
The contact centre: Information point for all questions around the gigabit roll-out
By running an information and help desk – the contact center –, the Federal Gigabit Bureau provides a centralized information for all enquiries regarding the aspects of the broadband roll-out from representatives of the federal states and municipalities, associations and private companies as well as interested citizens.
